Camping Last Year

Last year was our fifth year camping. Our family just loves going into the wilderness for two weeks each year and some weekends in late spring. The walks and the climbs and the spectacular scenery. All make it a wonderful shared experience and everyone gets something from it.

But I especially love the evenings when we’re back at camp. There’s a big fire going and we’re all wrapped up telling stories, singing songs, playing games. I make sure everyone joins in and as evening turns to night and the children are getting all sleepy. We put them in their little sleeping bags, tucked up nice and warm.

Day break, is always a surprise and it’s always nice to see what the day has install, a misty morning a bright sunny day or rain. Rain is something you have to be prepared for when you venture outside on a camping trip. It’s part of the fun, well not really fun, but you know what I mean. You just have to take more care as trails get muddy and slippery.

Taking it all in

The Camping Party

Our party consists of me and my husband, our two children and the grandparents, my mother and father. And it’s nice for all of us to spend to spend this sort of time together as we live in different places and visits tend to be of drive-through types. So these family getaways are all the more special to us.

But, with our two girls getting bigger the old tent has to be retired. That six person tent, idea five years ago is getting a bit cramped now. So we’re upgrading it next year to an eight person tent like the ones you can see here eight person tent That will give us just the right amount of space but still be quite manageable when assembling it and taking it down again.

The best 8 person tents also have zip-able rooms which are all the more important as the girls grow up. It means we, they and the grandparents all get some privacy.

photography using a light tent

light tent - sweet peppersStill Life Photography

When photographing small (smallish) objects in a still life type setup, it’s important to control the light and the background. A light box allows you to do just that. They’re relatively cheap, like the ones shown here light tent photography And used properly they will make your images pop out.

The main reason for using a light tent is to control the background. You want your object to be the main focal point of the image and to stand out. With nothing in the background competing with the main element in the photograph, it takes center stage and dominates the viewers attention. A light tent set up correctly, will make the background disappear and get it out of the image as it were. And this is a very effect we’re trying to achieve.

Controlling light is also an important requirement. We want to light our object in a way that’s flattering and that doesn’t cause hard lighting. Or on a shiny object, to many distracting reflections. Light boxes will have translucent sides which allow light to pass but softens it on the way through. We can use both sides of the light box for this and this allows us to work with a perfect modelling light.

Although very easy to setup and simple to use, you’re not limited to just one type of image. You can do all sorts of creative things with extra lights, light modifiers and reflectors. The main purpose here is that you control the way your object/model is lit. The light tent helps you in that quest and takes you to a higher level in your photography.

The great thing with photography these days is that there are no mistakes. You can shoot, analyze, tweak then shoot again. A good photograph is when your satisfied with the final image. Your in control.

Body and Soul

Our Inner Space

Mind and Spirit

Our bodies and minds need goodness. When your mind is in a good place and you’re eating the right foods, then there’s a general state of well-being. This state is important because it allows the doctor within, to go to work and to keep you in good health.

It’s not an easy thing to pull off there are lots of stressful events in everyone’s lives. So we just have to learn how to manage them.

There’s a school of thought that now believes a little bit of stress is not such a bad thing and may actually keep you healthy, in a perverse sort of way.

balancing stones

Because it’s all really about balance. You must out heard the saying “too much of a good thing isn’t a good thing at all”. It looks increasing likely that as well as the good things, the healthy options, you do need a dose of the bad things to achieve that balance.

So things that we’ve now considered as no-goes such as fats, sugars, alcohol are all okay in small doses. Small being the important point here.

What you do want to avoid as much as possible is processed foods. Additives are added to food which are tested individually, to ensure they’re okay for human consumption. But we eat lots of processed foods (anything in packets that is) so we get a huge variety of additives all mixed together and no one knows if these additives become harmful when used together inside of us.

However natural food ingredients are okay, you don’t need to out think your body. Your body will take charge of your health, because your body’s a survival machine and has been keeping your ancestors alive for millions of years. It knows what to do.

That’s why diets rarely work, long term. When you diet your body responds to the drop in calories and will reduce the number of calories it burns. It effectively goes into starvation mode and stores anything you might eat as fat reserves. It’s going to keep you alive because it doesn’t know you want to look great on the beach.
